The consular medical examination is required to obtain a U.S. residence visa and must be performed at an authorized clinic. In this guide, we explain everything about the cost of the consular medical exam, what it includes, how you pay for it, and how to anticipate possible additional costs for vaccines.

Cost of the consular medical exam established by immigration authorities

The cost of the consular medical exam is set and regulated by the U.S. Consulate General, so it is the same for all licensed clinics in Mexico. The cost is per person and varies by the applicant’s age at the time of the appointment.

These costs already include local taxes,s and three age groups are determined, each with a different value.

  • For adults 15 years of age and older, the price of the consular medical exam is $374.68 USD.
  • For children aged 2 to 14, it is $267.96 USD.
  • For infants under 2 years of age, the amount established is $203 USD.

Important: the cost in pesos may vary depending on the exchange rate published in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

What does the base cost of the exam include?

In general, the consular medical examination includes a review of medical history, physical examination, visual acuity check, and studies indicated by the protocol, such as blood samples for all applicants from 2 years of age, a urine sample for applicants from 18 to 24 years of age, and a chest X-ray for those over 15 years of age. In addition to the base cost, vaccines are billed separately.

Vaccinations and approximate costs according to your age and requirements

According to U.S. immigration laws, each applicant must comply with a specific vaccination schedule according to their age. The Mexican vaccination scheme is different from that of the United States.

To obtain U.S. residency, you must comply with this requirement, for which your vaccination card or any other previous official proof of vaccination will be reviewed; to apply only the vaccines necessary to comply with the United States vaccination schedule according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

If your vaccination card is missing doses, you do not have an official record, or you require a booster dose, you must pay for the vaccine in addition to the consular medical exam fee. In other words, vaccines are paid for separately.

How to avoid unnecessary extra costs?

  • Bring official proof of vaccinations (with verifiable dates and data); Unsupported self-reports are often not acceptable.
  • If you have been vaccinated at a public institution before, bring clear records; the staff will check whether they meet the requirements.
  • Consider that some vaccines may require more than one dose for the full schedule.

Update Note: The COVID-19 vaccine requirement for immigrant visa applicants was removed from the mandatory scheme effective March 11, 2025.

Payment methods accepted at CMI to facilitate your visit

The US authorities state that payments must be made directly at the licensed clinic. At Clínica Médica Internacional, you must make the payment on the same day of the appointment.

The payment methods you can use at our headquarters are as follows.

  • Cash. Payment is accepted in US Dollars (USD) or Mexican Pesos (MXN). It is important to note that if you pay in pesos, the official exchange rate of the day will be used according to the DOF
  • Cards. You can pay by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express).
  • Remote payment. In cases where the applicant does not pay directly, but a family member who is not physically at the clinic pays. To do this, we will provide you with a payment link, and once you complete it, it will be validated at checkout.

Remember that the consular medical exam is not charged in advance.

How to prepare for your appointment if you are traveling from another city to pay at the clinic?

Traveling from another city to fulfill the consular medical exam requirement at Clínica Médica Internacional in Ciudad Juárez requires organization. If you’re coming from abroad, here are practical tips for planning your transport, time, and budget.

  • Plan your transport for safe mobility. Make sure you have a confirmed means of transportation. At Clínica Médica Internacional, we offer free transportation for applicants from the Airport and the Central Camionera de Cd. Juárez, to their lodging, or directly to the clinic if you arrive at a time when the medical exam is feasible.
  • Avoid financial surprises with the budget you manage. U.S. authorities set the cost of the consular medical exam, but the final amount varies by applicant. Traveling from another city involves extra expenses that you must foresee.
  • Manage an emergency fund for potential vaccines. If you don’t have your original card or you lack boosters, you could spend between $150 and $300 USD in addition to the cost of the consular medical exam per person. Always carry an emergency fund for this concept.

In addition, we recommend keeping a physical folder with your passport, confirmation sheet, and original vaccination card. Planning these aspects and knowing the cost of the consular medical exam will give you greater peace of mind when you arrive at Clínica Médica Internacional.
